EIL: An Exceptional Approach to Nonmonotonic Reasoning

The paper introduces exceptional inheritance logic (EIL) for handling inheritance nonmono-tonicity. EIL depends on the idea that an inheritable exception should be part of an exceptional class for which the exception is a default. The introduction of an exceptional class changes nonmonotonic inheritance structures in such a way that ambiguities and connicts can be resolved in certain cases. Foundational concepts of EIL are discussed, and rules and mechanisms for identifying and locating exceptional classes are described. The application of EIL to problem inheritance structures is demonstrated.
